As paid laborers replaced slave labor plantations, a common practice was to pay workers partly or completely in scrip rather than cash. The scrip could only be used at the nearby plantation store. In sugar-growing areas like Terrebonne parish, this was a method of retaining the work force until the crop was harvested.〔 The Polmer name comes from an owner in the 1920s, the original owner was Raoul Toups. The store was run as a plantation store until the 1940s when it became a general mercantile store. That store closed in 1984.
